It think it all depends on the circumstances. Sopranos star James Gandolfini died of a heart attack and the movie world paid their tributes. Lou Reed was one of the most influential musicians ever, and the world of music mourned his death recently.
Neither of them, as far as I know, were honoured by a minutes applause or silence by the footballing world.
It’s all a matter of opinion. If a police officer is shot down in the line of duty, should he be honoured? If a man show’s unquestionable bravery by saving other people’s lives, should he be honoured? When living legend Bob Dylan dies, should he be honoured?
I don't think there's anything wrong when a “hero”, whatever their field of expertise, is honoured. The issue is, does everyone believe that they should be? The answer is undoubtedly no.
